Renewal Policies & Procedures

Library items are available for renewal if:

  • Renewal limit on the item has not been reached
  • There are no outstanding holds on the item
  • The item has not been recalled
  • Your account has not been blocked due to billed items or excessive fines

Items can be renewed:

  • At the circulation desk by presenting your ID card
  • By calling the Circulation Desk at 281-283-3939
  • Online through the library catalog

Renewing Books Online:

Log into your library account using your last name and your library barcode (barcode is 200 + your seven digit student ID number).  Once you are logged in, you can select individual items to renew or select "Renew All".

Fines

Calvin holding overdue library book Neumann Library charges fines for the following items:

  • 2-Hour Course Reserves: $0.50 per hour
  • 1, 3, 7, & 21 day Course Reserves: $2.00 per day
  • Recalled items: $1.00 per day
  • Study Room Keys: $5.00 per hour

Overdue or recall notices are sent to your campus email address, or the email account in your library record (community borrowers).

Fines exceeding $10.00 will result in a loss of borrowing privileges.

Fines may be paid by cash or check.

Fines accrued for UH Central or UH Downtown items may not be paid at UHCL Library, even if they were checked out from UHCL.

Holds & Book Searches

Want to place a hold on something?

Follow these steps to have a book ready to pick up at the circulation desk:

  1. Find the item you want in the library catalog.
  2. If the item is not held at UHCL, click Request.
  3. Log in with your last name and library barcode.
  4. Select the library where you wish to pick up the item.

You will be notified via email when the book has been retrieved and placed on the holds shelves.

Can't find a book?

If a book you need is not where it should be, let us know!  We can search for it for you.

To report a book missing:

  1. Find the book you want in the library catalog.
  2. Click Report an Item Missing.
  3. Select the copy that you cannot locate.
  4. Enter your name, student ID, email, and phone number.

Library staff will search for the book. We will contact you if it is found.

Recalls

What is a recall?

A recall may occur if there are holds on an item that has been checked out for an extended period of time.

Recalled items cannot be renewed and accrue fines of $1.00 per day after their due date.

Most items are subject to recall after six weeks. DVDs, audiobooks, and juvenile items are subject to recall after three weeks. These are only guidelines; there may be exceptions.

If an item you have borrowed is recalled, you will receive an email notification.

  • If the item has no renewals, the due date stays the same and fines will not accrue until that date.
  • If the item has been renewed one or more times, the due date for the item may change. The email you receive will notify you of the new due date.

Lost/Unreturned Library Items

If an item is not returned three weeks after its due date, it will be billed to your account. Billed items will result in a loss of borrowing privileges and a block on UHCL student or employee records.

The charge for lost items is the price of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. Payment for lost items must be by cash or check. Payment for lost items from other UH campuses must be made at the campus that owns the item, even if it was picked up at UHCL.

If you return an item after it has been billed, it will clear your account of all replacement costs for the item.  However, it will not clear any overdue fines for Course Reserves or recalled items.

If you pay for a lost/billed item, and then locate it, you may still return it to the library up to one year after payment date. The cost of the item will be refunded, but not the $10.00 processing fee.

You can return library items at:

  • The UHCL Pearland Campus Library service desk
