Database Access: Settings for Windows

Java, Javascript, ActiveX

Java must be installed and enabled on your computer.

If you are not sure that Java is installed,

  1. go to http://www.java.com/en/ and
  2. click the Do I have Java? link below the Free Java Download button.
You will be able to download and install the latest version from there if needed.
Javascript, ActiveX and other functions must be enabled where applicable.

Java

IE 8 and later:

  1. In the Tools menu, go to Internet Options
  2. Open the Security tab
  3. For Internet Security, click Custom level
  4. Enable binary and script behaviors
  5. Enable run ActiveX controls and plug-ins
  6. Enable script ActiveX controls marked safe
  7. Enable Active scripting
  8. Enable Scripting of Java Applets
  9. Click OK to save settings
  10. Click OK to exit

IE 7:

  1. In the Tools menu, go to Internet Options
  2. Open the Security tab
  3. For Internet Security, click Custom level
  4. Enable run ActiveX controls and plug-ins
  5. Enable script ActiveX controls marked safe
  6. Enable Java VM premissions (for Medium safety)
  7. Enable Active scripting
  8. Enable Scripting of Java Applets

Firefox v.26 and later:

  1. Type about:config in the Location bar (address bar)
  2. If you see a warning about the warranty, click the I'll be careful button
  3. Scroll down to find javascript.enabled
  4. If it is set to false, right click on javascript.enabled and then click Toggle
  5. Close Firefox

Firefox v25 and earlier:

  1. Click the Firefox button on the top left of the windoand then click Options
  2. Under the Content tab, make sure that Enable JavaScript is checked

Chrome:

  1. Click the Customize icon on the top right of the window and then click Settings
  2. Click the Show advanced settings link at the bottom of the window
  3. Click the Content settings button
  4. Under JavaScript, make sure that Allow all sites to run JavaScript is checked
  5. Click OK

Other Required Settings

 Cookies must be turned on and pop-up blockers turned off.

IE 7 and later:

  1. In the Tools menu, go to Internet Options
  2. Open the Privacy tab,
  3. Set privacy to Medium to allow cookies
  4. Turn off pop-up blocker

Firefox:

  1. Click the Firefox button on the top left of the window and then click Options
  2. Open the Content tab
  3. Make sure that Block pop-up windows is not checked
  4. Open the Privacy tab
  5. Make sure that Accept cookies from sites is checked
  6. Make sure that Accept third-party cookies is checked

Chrome:

  1. Click the Customize icon on the top right of the window and then click Settings
  2. Click the Show advanced settings link at the bottom of the window
  3. Click the Content settings button
  4. Under Cookies, make sure that Allow local data to be set is checked
  5. Under Pop-ups, make sure that Allow all sites to show pop-ups is checked
  6. Click Ok

Some video database content requires the free Silverlight browser plug-in. It works on all major operating systems on PC, Mac, and mobile devices, plus all major browsers, including Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and IE.

The Minimum Browser Requirements for EBSCO interfaces are as follows:

Internet Explorer 7.0 or later
FireFox 8.0 or later
Safari 5.1 or later
Google Chrome 16 or later
Other JavaScript, Cookies Enabled

The recommended screen resolution for EBSCOhost is 1024 x 768.

Notes:

  • Internet Explorer 8 users should turn off Compatibility View by clicking the button next to the web address bar in their browser. Compatibility View may cause some areas of EBSCO interfaces to not display correctly.

  • Internet Explorer 10 users may need to enable Compatibility View to properly view some interfaces.

  • Adobe Flash Player 8.0 or later is required to use Visual Search in EBSCOhost.

  • Adobe Flash Player 10.0 or later is required to use Text-To-Speech on interfaces in which it is available.

  • The Netscape browser is not supported by EBSCOhost, however some EBSCO applications may run using this type of browser.

  • Page Composer will not appear for users who do not have browsers that meet these requirements.
