Beyond the Free Web

Much online information requires a subscription or is in databases hidden from search engines.

Web-based information that must be purchased is part of what is often called the proprietary or restricted web.

Information located in databases, which you can only get with specific searches in those databases, usually is referred to as the hidden, invisible, or deep web.

Class assignments and sophisticated information needs that require the use of scholarly resources rarely can be satisfied by the free web alone. Find subscription research databases, online journals, ebooks, and traditional library materials through the library's subject guides and course guides.
